About

The Squamish Seniors [Centre] Society is a volunteer organization based at the 55 Activity Centre. The Society has been partnered with the District of Squamish in an advisory capacity related to recreational and physical well-being activities for seniors (55+) offered through Brennan Park Recreation Centre, 55 Activity Centre and Westwinds.

While the Society remains committed to this partnership and strengthening our relationship with the District, we have an opportunity to renew our purpose and focus. This will include giving back to the community, providing relevant educational and social activities, and encouraging fellowship in a supportive environment where everyone feels welcome.

In 2024, the new Board of Directors will lead a revitalization of the Society that resonates with the community of those 55+. We will incorporate our new vision, mission and values; revise our name and bylaws; and redesign our website. We hope you will join us on this journey that is intended to improve and enhance your quality of life through meaningful connections.

History

The Society was established May 20, 1993 and was incorporated under the name “Tantalus Seniors Centre Society”. In 2009. the name was changed to Squamish Seniors Centre Society. Since its inception, the Society’s primary purpose has been “To assist in the provision and operation of a centre for the recreational, educational and social activities for the senior citizens in the Squamish area”. Through a land swap deal with a local developer, the District of Squamish began planning a purpose-built facility, with input from the Society, to accommodate the needs of Squamish seniors for years to come. The 55 Activity Centre is owned and operated by the District of Squamish, and it was through volunteer hours, generous grants and local partnerships, that the doors opened to serve the community. The Society has continued to play a significant role in advising the District of Squamish on programming and activities. Through this collaboration, the District has done an exceptional job at expanding programs and streamlining registration and payment.
